Day 05 Today's walk to Jagat (1,341 m) involves good views, flagstone-paved paths, a cantilever bridge, and a wonderful trail carved out of the rocky valley wall.
Day 06 To reach Dharapani (1,943 m),walk along a trail stabilised with wire-enclosed stones, forest, a
stone stairway, fields of corn, barley, and potatoes and again, waterfalls and bridges over the roaring Marshyangdi river.
Day 07 On the way to Chame (2,713 m) you first see typical Tibetan architecture - closely spaced houses, flat roofs held down by firewood. The walk goes through pine, spruce, and maple forests, walnut and apple orchards, a river junction, and even a flat section to compensate for the steepness of other parts!
Day 08 Today's walk to Pisang, the first higher village on the trek (3,185 m) takes you past a Buddhist monastery (gomba), a kani (painted decorative stone arch over the trail), a chhorten (Buddhist memorial), buckwheat fields, apple orchards, and pine forests, wooden and suspension bridges, and a spectacular curved rock face. Also visible are the remains of a village set up by Khampa (Tibetan warrior) refugees in the 1960s.
Day 09 Walk to Manang (3,351 m). Along the way is a long mani wall made of stones inscribed with the Buddhist mantra om mane padme hum. There are also monasteries and prayer wheels, barley and buckwheat fields, wooden bridges, and the first view of the next few days' high altitude desert landscape.
Day 10 Under the gaze of the Gangapurna and Annapurna III peaks, leave Manang village going past the mani wall, cross the bridge and walk up to then enter the valley of the Khangsar Khola (river). Walk through blue pine forest, wheat fields, some scree slopes and cross the river to reach Khangsar (3,740 m). Enjoy this large, serene village with its traditional stone architecture.
Day 11 Today is a challenging walk up to the lake at the base of Tilicho Peak. Follow the river up to a meadow. You will then need to traverse some ridges to reach the crest of the moraine, from where you can look down to the lake on clear days. The descent to the stunning turquoise mirror that is Tilicho Tal (lake, 4,920 m) can be a little rough.
Day 12 To leave Manang via Tilicho Lake and enter the Kali Gandaki Valley on the other side, the usual trail is over Mesokanto La (pass, 5,200 m). You will need to walk around part of the lake along the glaciers and icefall and then traverse a ridge after which a long descent brings you to the pasture Namphu Kharka (ALTITUDE?)
Day 13 Complete the descent down to Jomosom (2,713 m) for some well-deserved rest. Enjoy this interesting, rather 'modern' heart of Thakali country.
Day 14 Walk out from the old town and along the desert-like valley floor through the ever-strengthening gusts of wind. Past the flat encampment of Eklai Bhatti ('Lonely Inn') climb up to the almost lush and very medieval Kagbeni (2,804 m), which lies at the confluence of two streams. Explore its winding packed mud passages, traditional passages, the stone paths that run through it, and the notable gomba that looks down on the whole village.
Day 15 Walk past the lovely apricot orchards, ruined fort, and mule stables at Jharkot, up along a stark hillside to reach Muktinath (3,802 m). Here in a wooded glade is the famed temple beloved to Buddhists, Hindus, and animists alike, where water emerges from stone, and fire emerges from this very water.
Day 16 Fit and acclimatised by now, it will be a breeze to walk back to Jomosom, where you can explore the old town by yourself and try some of the famed Marpha apple brandy.
